Building Survey Questions

Author structured survey questions on a sign type so contractors answer them in the field.

Structured survey questions let you collect specific, consistent data in the field — not just photos and notes. You build questions on a sign type, and those questions apply whenever a survey is created against that sign type. Authoring questions is available to organisation owners and admins; other members can view them read-only.

Where to build questions

Open a sign type in its full-page editor. You can reach it from the org Sign Types list (click the pencil / Edit) or from an event's sign types. The editor has tabs across the top:

  • Details
  • Faces & sizes
  • Custom fields
  • Survey questions
  • History
  • Dependencies

Select the Survey questions tab to start building.

Adding and ordering questions

  1. Click Add question to add a new question.
  2. Give each question a label (what the contractor reads). An internal key is generated automatically.
  3. Choose a question type (see below).
  4. Optionally turn on the required toggle.
  5. To reorder questions, drag the handle, or use the arrow controls.

Question types

There are eight question types to choose from:

  • Single select — choose one option from a list
  • Multiple select — choose any number of options
  • Yes / No
  • Number — with optional min/max and a unit
  • Short text
  • Long text
  • Date
  • Rating (1–5)

There is no photo question type. Photos are captured separately through the survey's existing photo and annotation tools.

Saving and versions

Click Save questions to save your changes. Each save creates a new schema version, and the current version number appears as a badge (for example, v2). Because every save is versioned, you can always look back at — or restore — an earlier set of questions from the History tab.

Schema size limit

A question set has a size limit of 64 KB. A size indicator appears as you get close to the limit. If you exceed it, split your questions across multiple sign types rather than trying to fit everything into one.

When questions apply

Questions you build here don't do anything on their own — they only come into play when a survey is created using this sign type. At that point a snapshot of the questions is attached to the survey, so later edits to the sign type won't change surveys that are already in progress. See Creating a survey for how to attach a sign type.
