Sign Types and Custom Fields
Build a shared sign type library, create one-off event types, and pin types per event.
Sign types are reusable templates that define the fields a sign can have. Signplanr supports two kinds of types:
- Library types live at the organisation level and can be pinned to any event.
- Event-only types live with a single event and don't appear in the org library — useful for one-off signs you don't want cluttering the catalogue.
When you add a sign to an event, the type picker shows the types pinned to that event plus the event's event-only types. The event-only ones are marked with an "Event only" badge.
The organisation library
Open Sign Type Library in the sidebar to see your org's full catalogue. The library page shows, for each type, how many events it's currently pinned to and how many signs use it across the org.
Auto-pin to all events
By default, new library types are auto-pinned to every event in your org, so they're available everywhere immediately. If you maintain a large library and want to curate per event instead, turn this off in Settings → General → Sign type library.
Who can do what
- Any org member can create or edit a library type, or save an event-only type to the library.
- Admins and owners can delete a library type, or demote one back to event-only (only allowed when the type is pinned to a single event and isn't used by signs in other events).
Per-event sign types
Inside an event, the Sign types sub-page lists which types are available there:
- Pinned from library — library types that have been made available on this event. Unpin a type to hide it from the picker; the unpin is blocked if signs in this event still use the type, but you can force it.
- Event-only types — types that live on this event only.
Two actions live at the top of the page:
- Pin from library — open a multi-select of library types not yet pinned here.
- Create new type — choose between "Event only" (default) or "Save to library."
Creating a type
- Enter a Name (e.g. "Banner", "A-Frame").
- Optionally add a Description, default dimensions, default material, and default face labels (front/back, etc.).
- Use the Form Builder to add custom fields. Each field has a label, a type (text / number / dropdown / checkbox), and an optional "required" toggle.
- Save.
Editing and deleting
- Editing a library type ripples into every event the type is pinned to.
- Editing an event-only type only affects that event.
- Deleting an event-only type is blocked if signs in the event use it — reassign them first, or force-delete.
- Deleting a library type is blocked if any sign in any event uses it.
Promoting and demoting
- Save to library (on an event-only type): turns it into a library type. The current event keeps it pinned; if auto-pin is on, it also pins to every other event in the org.
- Demote to event-only (on a library type, admin/owner only): only allowed when the type is pinned to a single event and isn't used by signs in other events. Useful for cleaning up types that turned out not to be reusable.
The library is collaborative: anyone in the org can add to it. If you'd rather lock library writes down to admins/owners, let us know — we'll prioritise the setting if it becomes a real problem.
Custom fields
Custom fields are flexible enough to capture almost anything — dimensions, materials, finishes, mounting instructions, internal reference codes. They appear on the sign form whenever a sign of this type is created or edited.
